Captioned Telephones Now Available

Captioned Telephone, CapTel, uses voice recognition software to assist individuals with a hearing loss communicate over the telephone with ease. The CapTel user simply dials the person they would like to contact and everything spoken will appear in a text window found on the CapTel phone.

The State of New Mexico has contracted Relay New Mexico to provide CapTel Services beginning August 1, 2004. Up to 400 hundred phones will be available on a first come first serve basis at no charge through June, 2005.

CAPTIONING ACTION ALERT

Closed Captioning is an issue very close to the deaf and hard of hearing citizens of New Mexico. Please write the US Department of Education and ask that they continue funding for captioning television programs. "Captioning is an very important issue to over 28 million deaf and hard of hearing Americans," said Kelby Brick, Director of the National Association of the Deaf Law and Advocacy Center. We can't imagine living without captioning.
