With school budgets being cut continuously, physical education is easily dropped of the curriculum in an attempt to help core studies survive. Although academics are certainly necessary, physical education is a must for students. As childhood obesity rises to a dangerous level, it may be the schools who teach children how to be active to stay healthy. Many health experts say that the convenience of fast food, coupled with longtime family lifestyles are the culprit for so many overweight kids. In other words, these kids come from families that have never been active.
If the education system will keep exercise and playing in the curriculum, then children can be introduced to activity and hopefully, taught to love it. Physical education is not just for athletes. All children can play active games or do basic exercises. Teachers can make it fun and something the kids don’t want to miss. Healthy kids have a higher learning capability, too. If kid’s diets are poor and they get no exercise, their minds will be sluggish. These students simply won’t be as motivated to learn.
As school boards look for ways to reduce the cost of education, they need to take a long hard look at how expensive it will be for society if they don’t keep students active. That exercise will energize their brains and make them perform better. Pysical education will also help prevent the longterm health problems that come with obesity. Many of those problems will bring on early disability for some of these children, and that will reduce the number of years they can participate in society.
