Special Education May Require Additional Therapy

There can be many reasons students may need special education during the school day. Some issues may be genetic learning disabilities, but in some cases, there may be emotional problems that affect a child’s learning capability. Therefore, special education may require additional therapy. It can be hard for a parent to admit that a child has emotional or mental disorders, but if a special education teacher recommends therapy, then the parent should take it seriously.

Some schools are able to provide some behavioral therapy, but many simply don’t have those kinds of resources. Therefore, a professional therapist who specializes in child disorders may have to be employed. The parent should understand that this is not a sign of weakness in herself or her child. Instead, it is a way to help a bright child succeed in school. Teachers do not hold a problem like this against a child. However, they may become frustrated if the parent won’t take extra responsibility to help the child progress beyond a special education situation.

Mental disorders are not necessarily disabling. If they are recognized and addressed, then the student can impr ove his learning capability and have a positive education experience. By adding outside therapy to the mix, this adult, who is neutral, can better identify modes of behavioral modification that the parent or teachers may not be able to identify and put into place. Instead parents and teachers can support and monitor the therapist’s recommendations.

Each child is affected by different things in his environment. School can be traumatic for some. It could be that he is a victim of bullying, or he may have a low self esteem for some reason, or he may suffer from common disorders like OCD or ADHD. Medications don’t have to be the only source of wellness. Special education coupled with therapy will have a much more long term positive outcome.
